The Material World of Modern Segregation: St. Louis in the Long Era of Ferguson (MWMS) is an outgrowth of the Washington University American Culture Studies Program’s Modern Segregation program initiative and has been generously supported throughout by the program’s Danforth Endowment.

In addition, the MWMS April 2017 symposium and affiliated course (AMCS 3190), taught in Spring 2017 and again in 2019, were supported by the Office of the Provost at Washington University by means of a Ferguson Academic Seed Fund grant.  The further development and publication of the book were funded by an Office of Faculty Affairs and Diversity Grant; a Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity (CRE2) Small Research Grant; and support from Arts & Sciences; the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts; the University Library; the Brown School of Social Work; and the African + African-American Studies Department.

We also wish to acknowledge the remarkable support of the American Culture Studies program’s staff, past and present, including: Kierstan Kaushal-Carter, Morgan Brooks, Dave Walsh, Jennifer Gallinat, Terri Behr, and Máire Murphy, all of whom played key roles in the staging and documentation of conversations, the hosting of visiting scholars, and other aspects of the project.

Special gratitude is reserved for managing editor Ben Fulton and the rest of the editorial staff at The Common Reader, who have shown great care and dedication in their efforts to help us bring this large-scale volume into print. Additional thanks can be found in the Acknowledgements page of the publication itself.
